San Diego Unified becomes the latest school district to approve Meatless Monday in school cafeterias. Los Angeles Unified, the country’s second largest school district, went meatless on Mondays a few months ago. A+, California! [CBS]

On the GMO front: Connecticut passes a bill that would require labeling genetically modified foods. (The catch: four other states, including one that shares a border with Connecticut, need to approve similar measures before Connecticut’s bill can go into effect.) Small steps! [New York Times]

The USDA and EPA launch the “U.S. Food Waste Challenge,” aiming to partner with 1,000 organizations by 2020 in order to reduce, recover, and recycle wasted food in schools, supermarkets, and beyond. Exciting to hear, considering nearly 40 percent of all food produced in this country gets tossed in the trash!
