Spicy Tempeh Hash



Ingredient Line: 
8 oz. cubed tempeh
Ingredient Line: 
1 Tbs. canola oil
Ingredient Line: 
1 cup chopped onions
Ingredient Line: 
1 cup chopped green pepper
Ingredient Line: 
1 cup diced potatoes
Ingredient Line: 
2 tsp. paprika
Ingredient Line: 
½ tsp. garlic powder
Ingredient Line: 
½ tsp. onion powder
Ingredient Line: 
1 pinch cayenne pepper


Spread tempeh in bottom of large nonstick skillet. Add 1/2 cup water, cover, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer 5 minutes. Drain in colander, and wipe out skillet. Add oil to skillet, and heat over medium-high heat. Return tempeh to pan along with onion, green bell pepper, and potatoes. Sauté 5 to 7 minutes, or until beginning to brown. Sprinkle with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. Sauté 7 to 8 minutes, or until potatoes are browned and tender.

This is a great recipe, but next time I make it I'll cook the potatoes a little first. They just took so much longer to cook than everything else. I added garlic, too.

Great breakfast. Also if u will have left overs you can use them for your sandwich

This delicious! I used smoked paprika for a deeper flavor. The portion was hearty and perfect for an autumn morning!

Yum-yum, very good! I may use a little soy sauce or tamari next time while doing the saute. Dice the potatoes to 1/2 inch cubes so they will cook all the way thru. Thanks for the recipe.

Ok..I bit what is Tempeh?

This is so good. I used firm tofu instead of tempeh. I sautéed it first in a little oil, then followed the rest of the recipe starting where the onions are put in.


To tolegranny if your still around - tempeh is cooked fermented soybeans that comes in a block. Its about a half inch thick. It is delicious. I just saute it in soy sauce and keep it in the fridge and when I'm looking for something to nosh on I take a piece.

Good with salsa as well!

What is Tempeh?? And do you have abt recipes that use fermented soy?

This was seriously lacking in flavour, I had to pour on some salsa to make it edible. Wouldn't make it again.

How could you not know to avoid canola oil? It is known if not labeled org or non GMO, it is GMO. Scary that a mag of this stature would recommend it.

I cube the tempeh, marinade in tamari and curry powder in the fridge overnight, and sauté with coconut butter. Magnifico! :)

I'm trying to watch my carb intake is there a substitute for the potatoes that you would suggest?

This is delicious, but I think you have to at least double the spices and add salt. I mean, at least double... and this also needs salt. And, when you do that, it is DELICIOUS. I also suggest giving it a bit more than 2 pinches of cayenne. ;) Oh, and add some black pepper... additional herbs are also wonderful.

I love this recipe and had so much fun making and enjoying it. It is so versatile, next time I am going to add nuts pineapple maybe apples and serve it over rice with a sweet and sour sauce. I like things spicy. I also used marinated sesame garlic tempeh strips.

Oh and my husband gave it a five star!
