Beverages

These drinks satisfy thirst with light, delightful flavors.
Frozen Gin Lemonade

Frozen Gin Lemonade

30 minutes or fewer

Mashing the lemon slices with the sugar releases the oil from the skins for extra-lemony flavor that’s not too sour. Blend drinks in two batches so there’s plenty of room in the blender for the ice to chop evenly. You can substitute vodka for the gin, or just omit the alcohol.

Mixed Fruit Smoothie

Mixed Fruit Smoothie

Protein powder is the "secret" ingredient that makes this smoothie so good for you in the morning. If you're making it with frozen fruit, use only 3 ice cubes.

Mexican Hot Chocolate

Mexican Hot Chocolate

In Mexico, round boxes of La Abuelita or Ibarra chocolate are as familiar and well-loved as Nestlé’s Quick and Hershey’s syrup are in the United States. The individually wrapped tablets of chocolate inside are laced with canela (Mexican cinnamon) and stoneground cocoa nibs, which give Mexican hot chocolate its distinctive flavor and earthy texture. Both brands are becoming more common in national supermarkets, but you can always find them in Mexican markets or at mexgrocer.com.

Posada Punch

¡Salud! This makes a dazzling party drink whether poured from a frosty pitcher or doubled or tripled and served in a punch bowl. The frozen mango chunks (found in the freezer section of most supermarkets) keep the punch cool without diluting it. The pomegranate seeds add color.

Creamy Wake-Up Shake

Creamy Wake-Up Shake

To really speed things up, make a double or triple batch of the soymilk-juice-vanilla-syrup-ginger mixture, and refrigerate it in an airtight container. In the morning, put 2 cups of it in the blender with the fruit and ice, then just whip and sip.

Café Brûlot

If you prepare this at the table, it is even more festive—ladling flaming coffee into cups is a showstopper. Remove zest with a paring knife, avoiding any white pith.

Pumpkin Pie Smoothie

Jen Galfano, of West Chester, Pa., created this festive drink as a post-exercise treat. “I’m a big fan of pumpkin pie,” she says, “but I only like the inside of the pie and not the crust, so this smoothie was the perfect solution—I feel like I’m drinking pie for breakfast.”
