In Birmingham, Alabama, 30 percent of residents live below poverty level.

Jones Valley Teaching Farm works to combat hunger in its community through food education. The nonprofit serves K through 12th-grade students who might not have access to good, whole foods and want to learn more about farm-to-table meals.

The organization’s program Good School Food is focused on expanding classroom learning into after-school and apprentice programs, where students can practice hands-on farming. That’s not all Jones Valley is doing, however. Additional programs include:

  • Farm Club / Culinary Club: After-school programs at K-8 partner schools make the connection between sustainable farming, culinary skills, and STEM learning, and social-emotional growth.
  • Camp Grow: This program occurs during school breaks and K-8 participants build technical farming and culinary skills.
  • JVTF Apprenticeship Model: High School Internship and the JVTF Apprenticeship continue the education of students and graduates through on-the-job training, professional experience, mentorship, and pathways to employment and/or post-secondary education.
  • Free Food: Produce and seedling distribution strategically focuses on providing fresh produce to the highest need communities in our area.

In spring of this year, our parent company, Outside, Inc. launched Find Your Good and partnered with 14 nonprofit organizations that share our mission to get everyone outside in support of a healthy planet. We’re hoping to raise $5,000 for Jones Valley Teach Farm, which continues to bring growth and cultivation in its community. We need your help!
