Last week, the Pantone Color Institute revealed its Pantone Color of the Year 2022 – a periwinkle hue named Very Peri. As they do each year, color experts at Pantone analyze global social and cultural trends and select a color (or, in the case of 2021 and 2016, a pair of colors) that feels appropriate and meaningful for the moment. In the case of 2022, that meant creating an entirely new color, not previously part of Pantone’s standardized system of well over 1,000 discrete tones.

“Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place. As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red violet infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us,” Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, said in a statement.

Last year, the institue selected a pair of shades – Ultimate Gray (a neutral gray) and Illuminating (highlighter citron) – intended to evoke beacons of light starting to emerge through a bleak and uncertain period. With Very Perri, Pantone Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman says, the color is appropriate “as we move into a world of unprecedented change.” She describes it as a color that “displays a spritely, joyous attitude and encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.”

How to Add Very Peri, Pantone Color of the Year 2022, to Your Kitchen

Want to incorporate the color of the year into your kitchen as soon as possible? We’ve pulled together some items to add to your cart. Since Very Peri is totally new, consumer product designers have generally not been able to manufacture pieces in precisely this color before – Pantone’s matching system is the standard in many industries, so if there wasn’t a swatch of it previously available, it wouldn’t have been easy for someone to dream up this shade of periwinkle and have it produced as paint or textile dye, for example – but there are still plenty of items on the market that are pretty close.
