Ketchup Popsicles Are Here and Set to be Summer’s Most Divisive Snack

It seems like it was only yesterday that the world was chattering about the Kraft Mac & Cheese and Grey Poupon Mustard ice cream flavors from Van Leeuwen but today we learned of a new a new frozen treat (?) that’s raising the internet’s collective eyebrow. French’s has just dropped a ketchup popsicle in collaboration with Toronto-based Happy Pops.

The “Frenchsicle” might look like a juicy strawberry paleta, but one lick reveals an entirely more unusual flavor. “The popsicle tastes like a Caesar and is the perfect mix of sweet and savory,” Happy Pops notes in an Instagram announcement of the collaboration.

The limited-edition popsicle is only available in Canada and uses 100 percent Canada-grown tomatoes and organic cane sugar. Canadians aren’t new to ketchup-flavored snacks. After all, this is the nation famed for ketchup potato chips and, according to a press release from French’s, 79 percent of Canadians say they “like” or “love” the red condiment.

Or, you can make your own, wherever you are. A recipe supplied by French’s offers a DIY option, calling for just ketchup, tomato juice, hot sauce, and an optional dusting of Bloody Mary-like seasoning powder.

DIY Ketchup Popsicle Recipe

Serves 6

INGREDIENTS 

  • 3 1/4 cups (810 milliliters) tomato juice
  • 1/2 cup (125 milliliters) French’s® Tomato Ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons (10 milliliters) FRANK’S RedHot® Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce
  • Caesar Rim (optional)

PROCEDURE

Whisk tomato juice, Ketchup, and RedHot sauce in large pitcher or measuring cup until well blended. Pour mixture into popsicle molds of your desired shape and size. Freeze at least 8 hours or until solid. Serve frozen, sprinkled lightly with Caesar Rim, if desired.
