We all know someone who wants to transition to plant-based milks, but still kind of longs for the way dairy products taste. For that person who wants ‘milk-milk’ to splash in their coffee or cook with in recipes, the new, dairy-free Silk Nextmilk might just be the answer.
“Some consumers remain skeptical about plant-based food and beverages due to taste and texture, but Silk Nextmilk is on a mission to change that. We deconstructed dairy to create this revolutionary product that delivers the taste and texture we think dairy drinkers will love,” John Starkey, president of plant-based food and beverages at Silk’s parent company Danone North America, said in an announcement of the product. “Thanks to Silk Nextmilk — a true category game changer — we’re confident dairy lovers will want to cross the aisle.”
To get the simulation just right, Silk’s team actually collaborated with Danone’s dairy division on research into what makes dairy milk taste and feel quite the way it does. Then they took that information back and found what a company statement calls “a remarkably delicious blend of plants that are designed to deliver on key attributes.”
Available in whole and 2% versions, the oat-based Silk Nextmilk delivers a lot of the positive nutrition benefits people point out about dairy milk – calcium, vitamin D, B12, protein – but with 30 percent fewer calories. Starting today, you’ll be able to find it in refrigerators at major supermarkets including Target, Kroger, and HEB.
While many of us already have a non-dairy milk (or several!) that we already love, the company hopes this product will win over the hold-outs and contribute to a more plant-based future.
