Pilots-N-Paws, a nationwide team of small-aircraft pilots and animal rescuers who move animals across state lines from overcrowded facilities—where they’ll most likely be euthanized—to shelters and rescue groups committed to finding them homes. The program began in early 2008 when pilot Jon Wehrenberg shuttled a Doberman from Florida to South Carolina for his friend Debi Boies; soon after, the two cofounded the organization. Since then, nearly
300 pilots have joined the mission. A Web-based message board lets pilots access details about animals in need. These freedom fliers have already saved about 300 animals from being killed.

Palazzo Versace Dubai for refrigerating its beach. The hotel and condominium complex, which is set to open in the United Arab Emirates city in late 2009 or early 2010, is installing a network of computer-controlled heat-absorbing pipes under the sand to keep the complex’s guests and residents comfortable in Dubai’s sweltering temperatures; in summer these average 104°F and can soar as high as 122°F. Palazzo Versace’s plans have shocked environmentalists, who are quick to point out that the worst effects of climate change will be felt by the world’s poor. The environmentally uncool project will add to Dubai’s already Sasquatch-size carbon footprint, which amounts to 44 tons of CO2 per person each year. By contrast, the average American generates 20 tons of greenhouse gases annually.
