What is it about seafood? Plenty of people who consider themselves vegetarian will tell you they eat fish every now and then. “I don’t eat anything with a face,” some say. Fish just seem so alien. What’s so powerful about the documentary Oceans is that it plunges you into the depths of their world.

The narration—by actor and environmental activist Pierce Brosnan—is beside the point. Much of it is frankly lost in translation from the original French. But the film’s astounding cinematography, with an assist from digital surround sound, immerses you so totally in the world of marine life that you could swear you feel ocean tides surge through you. A fierce struggle for survival is just one of the varying moods captured by state-of-the-art cameras. Ecological issues are given immediacy by satellite views of dingy waste spewing into blue ocean waters.

Statistics may numb or bewilder you, but you can’t shake the visceral impact of this film.
